Rivers Now

© Anne Sumner 2019

Whisked myself away to sleep
Took a chance that almost rescued me
There’s a secret I can keep
When you’re with me
Underneath the aching sky
Full of water, full of butterflies
I was always on your side
Don’t let me go
Don’t let me hide

You think you stand on the ground
You think you know where the rivers flow
You think that I’ve been waiting on a love to bring me down
But what do we say about the rivers now?

On some long-forgotten shore
Without the words for what I’m searching for
It’s not a secret any more
The darkness that falls
I shed a solitary tear
As the lonely heron flew in circles
You think the end is drawing near
It all starts from now
It all starts from here

You think you stand on the ground
You think you know where the rivers flow
You think that I’ve been waiting on a love to bring me down
But what do we say about the rivers now?

I’ve been waiting to find
The view of here through your eyes
Sweet witness of mine
To take my hand
From where you stand

You think you stand on the ground
You think you know where the rivers flow
You think that I’ve been waiting on a love to bring me down
But what do we say about the rivers now?
