Shades of Indigo

© Anne Sumner 2019

You were wondering if I was alone
And if I needed you then how you would you know it?
Shades of indigo in the water
And you asked me if you could hold me for the first time
I’ve been waiting to see you smile at me
And find out what colour are your eyes
And we stood outside

Why don’t you get it?
It’s nothing like I’d have expected
And you were my last chance
My nothing-comes-close-to-this romance
And I’d always hoped that the line stayed open
Even when we sleep
And I hope that if you are ever lonely
You’ll remember me

I’d been waiting for you to come round and explain
Why you were always so far away
’Cause you know that it doesn’t make sense
When you tell me that we can’t always be together
I’ve been watching the days that pass her alone
Don’t you know there are ways to bring ourselves
Closer than this?

Why don’t you get it?
It’s nothing like I’d have expected
And you were my last chance
My nothing-comes-close-to-this romance
And I’d always hoped that the line stayed open
Even when we sleep
And I hope that if you are ever lonely
You’ll remember me

I’d been waiting for you to call
I’d been waiting for you to show up
At my front door, and say darling
You need me, or something along those lines…
